Sonja Castaneda-Cudney

I’ve looked into her eyes and listened to her speak and marveled at how a person can be so exquisite. It’s her hair — yes; her eyes — yes; her smile — yes. It’s her compassion, her fire. Yes, all of those.

And none of those.

I’ve watched her dance, I’ve seen her in love, I’ve witnessed her disappointment, I’ve rejoiced at her good news. She is an artist, a scholar, an advocate, a traveler, a seeker, a lover, a daughter, a sister, a friend.

We’ve lost touch for years at a time while she lived in China or traveled Europe or got a graduate degree on the east coast.

Still. After all these years. She is a flame and my words are shadow.
